Is Phone Service Deductible for DoorDash Drivers?

Two smiling passenger and a driver in a car, both seat-belted; one wears headphones and a green shirt, the other sunglasses, with an orange crate.

Yes — if you use your phone for DoorDash, a portion of your phone bill is tax-deductible. The key word is portion: you can only deduct the percentage of use that's actually business-related.

As a DoorDash driver, your phone is basically your office. You use it for the app itself, GPS navigation, texting customers about drop-offs, and communicating with support. Because of that, the IRS allows you to deduct the business-use percentage of your phone bill as a work expense.

Here's how it typically works: if you estimate you use your phone for DoorDash about 40% of the time, you can deduct 40% of your monthly phone bill. If your bill is $80/month, that's about $32/month, or roughly $384/year — money that reduces your taxable income.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • You don't need a separate "work phone" to claim this deduction — most drivers use one phone for everything.

  • Keep it reasonable. A wildly high percentage (like 90%) is more likely to raise questions if you're ever asked to explain it.

  • If you buy a new phone primarily for delivery work, that cost may also be partially deductible.

This is one of those deductions drivers frequently forget about simply because it feels too small to matter — but across a year, it adds up.

BossTax's free app tracks expenses like this automatically as they come in, so you're not trying to reconstruct your phone usage percentage from memory in April. It flags deductions like this one as you go. Not sure what else you can deduct as a driver? Click here to schedule a free 15-minute chat with our team — no pressure, just answers.
