Is a Home Server Used for Client Testing Deductible or Depreciated

Home server setup used for client testing environments

It depends on the cost — a lower-cost home server setup typically qualifies for Section 179, letting you deduct the full cost in the year of purchase, while a larger or more expensive build may be better suited to depreciation, spreading the deduction out over its useful life.

A server used specifically to test client environments, run staging versions of client applications, or maintain development environments is treated as business equipment, similar to any other specialized hardware purchase. Section 179 generally allows the full cost to be deducted immediately in the year you buy it, as long as the equipment is used primarily for business, which for a dedicated client-testing server, it typically is.

If you build out a more substantial server setup — multiple units, significant storage, or specialized networking equipment — you may choose to depreciate the cost over several years instead, particularly if you want to spread deductions across future years rather than taking a large deduction all at once. As with other equipment decisions, this often comes down to your income pattern and tax planning preferences rather than any hard rule.

A simple way to decide:

  • Lower-cost setup, want the deduction now: Section 179 for full cost in the year of purchase

  • Larger investment, want to spread deductions out: Depreciate over the server's useful life

If the server is also used for personal purposes:

  • Only the business-use percentage is deductible

  • A server used exclusively for client testing and development can be deducted in full

A common mistake: consultants assume any home server automatically has to be depreciated over several years, when Section 179 often allows the full cost to be deducted immediately instead.

BossTax's free app flags equipment purchases like this and shows what the deduction looks like under each option, so you can decide what fits your situation.
