Can You Deduct a Car Detailing Subscription as a Rideshare Driver?

Clean rideshare vehicle interior after detailing service

It depends on which mileage method you use — if you use the standard mileage rate, a detailing subscription generally isn't separately deductible, but if you use the actual expense method, it can be, as a vehicle maintenance cost tied to keeping your car passenger-ready.

The standard mileage rate is built to cover the average cost of operating a vehicle for business use, including routine upkeep like washes and light detailing. If you've chosen that method for the year, you generally can't deduct a detailing subscription on top of it — doing so would be double-counting a cost the mileage rate is already meant to absorb.

If you use the actual expense method instead, calculating your vehicle costs based on your actual business-use percentage, a recurring detailing subscription is treated like any other maintenance cost. Since keeping your car clean is arguably more central to the job for a rideshare driver than most vehicle owners — passenger ratings are directly tied to it — this is a reasonably strong case for a deductible business expense under that method.

A simple way to think about it:

Standard mileage rate: Detailing is already priced into the rate — don't deduct it separately

Actual expense method: Detailing subscriptions and one-off washes are deductible as vehicle maintenance, prorated to your business-use percentage

Other vehicle costs treated the same way under actual expenses:

Car washes and interior cleaning supplies

Routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations)

Air fresheners and small passenger-comfort items

A common mistake: drivers sign up for a monthly detailing subscription and deduct it in full regardless of which mileage method they're using, without realizing the standard mileage rate already accounts for this type of expense.

BossTax's free app tracks your chosen mileage method and flags which maintenance costs are — and aren't — separately deductible based on it.
