Can Rideshare Drivers Deduct EV Charging Costs Separately From Gas?

Aug 31
2 min read

Electric vehicle charging at public station for rideshare driving

Yes — if you drive an electric or hybrid vehicle for Uber or Lyft and use the actual expense method, EV charging costs are deductible the same way gas would be for a traditional vehicle, though the standard mileage rate changes how this works.

If you use the standard mileage rate (a flat amount per business mile), that rate already factors in the average cost of fuel — including electricity — so you can't separately deduct your charging costs on top of it. But if you use the actual expense method instead, your electricity costs specifically tied to charging for business driving are deductible, calculated based on your business-use percentage of the vehicle.

The tricky part for EV drivers is separating home charging from public charging. Public charging station costs are straightforward to track since they're itemized purchases. Home charging is harder, since it's typically bundled into your regular electric bill — some drivers install a dedicated EV charging meter or estimate their business-use percentage of overall home electricity to calculate this portion accurately.

A simple way to think about it:

Standard mileage rate: Charging costs are already built in — don't deduct them separately

Actual expense method: Track public charging receipts and estimate the business-use portion of home charging

Other commonly deductible rideshare vehicle expenses under the actual expense method:

  • Maintenance and repairs

  • Insurance

  • Depreciation or lease payments

  • Registration fees

A common mistake: EV-driving rideshare drivers assume they can deduct charging costs on top of the standard mileage rate the same way they might think about a gas receipt, when the mileage rate is designed to cover fuel costs of any kind, electric or gas.

BossTax's free app tracks your mileage and flags whether the standard rate or actual expenses (including EV charging) will save you more this year.
