Can Musicians Deduct Streaming Platform Distribution Fees?

Yes — fees paid to distribute your music to streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, or YouTube are deductible business expenses, since they're a direct cost of getting your work in front of paying listeners and generating income.

Whether you use a distribution service that charges a flat annual fee, a per-release fee, or takes a percentage of your streaming royalties, that cost is an ordinary business expense tied directly to income you're earning as a musician.

This applies whether the income from streaming is your main source of revenue or a smaller supplement to gig income — the distribution cost is deductible either way, as long as you're actively releasing music for commercial purposes.

If your distributor takes a percentage cut rather than charging a flat fee, you don't need to separately deduct that cut — it simply reduces the royalty income you report in the first place, since you only ever receive and report the net amount.

Flat fees paid upfront, on the other hand, are deducted as a straightforward expense regardless of how much streaming income actually comes in that year.

Other digital distribution costs commonly deductible for musicians:

  • Music mastering and mixing services before release

  • Digital cover art design

  • Metadata and ISRC code registration fees

  • Playlist pitching or promotion services

A common mistake: musicians assume distribution fees only make sense to deduct in years when streaming income is strong, when the cost is deductible regardless of how much (or how little) the release actually earns that year.

BossTax's free app tracks distribution and platform fees automatically, so these smaller recurring costs don't get lost next to bigger equipment purchases.
