Can Independent IT Consultants Deduct Their Home Office and Equipment?

Yes — a dedicated home office, computer equipment, and software used for client work are all deductible for independent IT consultants, as long as they're used regularly and specifically for the business.

If you work from a space in your home used exclusively for client work, you can use either the simplified home office method ($5 per square foot, up to 300 square feet, for a maximum of $1,500) or the regular method, which applies your actual business-use percentage to rent or mortgage interest, utilities, and related costs. Most consultants with a smaller dedicated office find the simplified method easier, since it requires far less recordkeeping.

Equipment is often the bigger deduction for IT consultants. Laptops, monitors, servers, networking equipment, and other hardware used primarily for client work may qualify for Section 179, letting you deduct the full cost immediately in the year of purchase rather than depreciating it over several years.

Other commonly deductible IT consultant expenses:

  • Computer hardware, monitors, and networking equipment

  • Software licenses, cloud hosting, and development tools

  • Professional certifications and technical training

  • A portion of your internet bill

  • Travel to on-site client visits and conferences

A frequent mistake: consultants deduct their full internet bill or a personal computer used for both client work and personal use, when only the business-use percentage is deductible unless the equipment is used exclusively for the business.

BossTax's free app tracks equipment purchases and software subscriptions automatically, flagging which ones may qualify for an immediate write-off versus depreciation.
