Can Freelance Graphic Designers Deduct Their Software and Equipment?

Yes — design software subscriptions, computer equipment, and other tools used for client work are deductible for independent graphic designers, but personal-use equipment or software you'd have regardless of freelancing doesn't qualify.

Subscriptions like Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva Pro, or font licensing used for client projects are ordinary business costs, so the full subscription fee is deductible as long as it's used for work. Larger purchases, like a new laptop, monitor, or drawing tablet, may qualify for Section 179, which lets you deduct the full cost immediately in the year of purchase rather than depreciating it over several years, as long as the equipment is used primarily for business.

If you work from a dedicated space in your home, that portion of your home may also qualify for the home office deduction, using either the simplified method ($5 per square foot, up to 300 square feet) or the regular method based on actual home expenses.

Other commonly deductible graphic designer expenses:

  • Design software and font licensing subscriptions

  • Computer hardware, monitors, and drawing tablets

  • Stock photo, video, and asset library subscriptions

  • Portfolio website hosting and domain fees

  • Professional development courses and design conferences

A frequent mistake: designers deduct a computer or software subscription used for both client work and personal projects at full cost, when only the business-use portion is deductible unless it's used exclusively for the business.

BossTax's free app tracks software subscriptions and equipment purchases automatically, flagging which ones may qualify for an immediate write-off versus depreciation.
