Can Estheticians Deduct Product Samples Given to Clients for Free?

Esthetician giving client a free product sample after treatment

Yes — product samples given to clients at no charge are deductible, but the IRS caps how much you can deduct per person per year, so it's worth understanding the limit before you build sampling into your regular routine.

Free samples handed out to promote your services or build client loyalty are generally treated as a form of business gift, and the IRS limits deductible business gifts to $25 per recipient per year. If you give a client a small sample worth $8 after every visit and they come in six times a year, that's $48 in samples for one client — only $25 of that is deductible, even though the full cost was a legitimate business expense to give.

There's an important distinction here from marketing samples given away broadly rather than to a specific known client — for example, sample packets included in a welcome bag for new clients you don't yet have an ongoing relationship with, or products given away at a booth at a local event. Those are generally treated as advertising or marketing expenses rather than gifts, and aren't subject to the same $25 per-person cap, since they're not tied to a specific, ongoing client relationship.

How to think about it:

  • Samples for existing, known clients: Treated as gifts, capped at $25 per person per year

  • Samples given broadly at events or to new prospects: Treated as marketing/advertising, no per-person cap

Other product-related expenses commonly deductible for estheticians:

  • Products used directly during paid treatments

  • Retail products purchased for resale (deducted as cost of goods sold when sold)

  • Sample packaging or branded giveaway materials

A common mistake: estheticians assume all samples are fully deductible advertising costs regardless of who receives them, without realizing the $25 gift cap applies once a sample is tied to a specific, returning client.

BossTax's free app tracks sample and gift costs by client, so you always know where you stand against the $25 limit before it becomes a problem at tax time.
